Crispy Air-Fried Onions Recipe

Crispy onions are the perfect topping for casseroles, burgers, salads, or even as a snack. This air-fried version uses less oil but delivers all the crunch and flavor you love!

Ingredients

  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil

  • 1 cup flour

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 3/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions:
Thinly slice the onion into rings and separate them.

  2. Make the Buttermilk Mixture:
In a bowl, combine the milk and apple cider vinegar. Let it sit for 5 minutes to create a buttermilk substitute.

  3. Soak the Onions:
Add the sliced onions to the buttermilk mixture. Let them soak for at least 15 minutes to tenderize and absorb flavor.

  4. Prepare the Coating:
In a separate bowl, mix the flour, salt, and black pepper.

  5. Coat the Onions:
Remove the onions from the buttermilk mixture and lightly shake off the excess. Toss them in the flour mixture until evenly coated.

  6. Air Fry the Onions:

    • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).

    • Lightly coat the air fryer basket with olive oil or cooking spray.

    • Place the coated onions in the basket in a single layer. Lightly drizzle the olive oil over the top or spray them with more cooking spray.

    • Cook for 10-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until the onions are golden brown and crispy.

  7. Serve and Enjoy:
These crispy onions are ready to top your favorite dishes or enjoy as is!

Tips:

  • For an extra crunch, repeat the coating process with a second layer of buttermilk and flour.

  • Use gluten-free flour if needed to accommodate dietary preferences.
