Homemade Beef Bone Broth Recipe

Bone broth is a nutrient-rich staple perfect for sipping or as a base for soups, stews, and sauces. This easy crockpot recipe uses beef marrow bones, fresh vegetables, and a long simmering time to extract maximum flavor and health benefits.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs beef bone marrow

  • 3 carrots, roughly chopped

  • 3 celery sticks, roughly chopped

  • 1 onion, quartered

  • 2 cloves garlic (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

  • 1-2 bay leaves

  • 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns

  • Water, to fill

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bones:
If desired, roast the beef bones at 400°F (200°C) for 20-30 minutes to enhance the flavor of the broth. Place the beef bone marrow in your crockpot and cover with water. Add the apple cider vinegar. Let the bones soak for at least 30 minutes. This step helps draw out the minerals and nutrients from the bones for a more nutritious broth.

  2. Add Vegetables: After soaking, add the chopped carrots, celery, and onion to the crockpot.

  3. Cook the Broth: Fill the crockpot with water until the bones and vegetables are fully submerged. Set the crockpot to low and let it cook for 48 hours for maximum flavor and nutrients.

  4. Strain and Store:
Strain the broth through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove solids. Let it cool, then store in airtight containers in the refrigerator (up to 5 days) or freezer (up to 3 months).
